Tuesday August 19th, 2003 Meeting 5:30 @ CSC (Directions)

Thanks to InsiTech for their very interesting presentation on XTT. The presentation started out with an overview of XTT and then quickly dove into the details with extensive code examples. Despite it being a beautiful summer day the meeting stretched well beyond eight with technical questions. At eight a poll was taken and it was decided to continue with a couple more code examples. Topics covered included: extensibility, synchronization/locking, deployment, modifying generated code, integration with Netbeans, creation of custom controls, debugging, and much more.
Door Prizes: Special thanks to Addison-Wesley and O'Reilly for the door prizes and InsiTech for the pizza as well as CSC for the facilities!
Abstract
XTT does for distributed Java applications what PowerBuilder“ and Visual Basic“ do for the traditional client-server world, and much, much more.

XTT Technology provides developers with an enabling development environment that allows them to focus on the implementation of business logic and abstracts away the infrastructure required to implement a distributed Java application with an ultra-thin yet rich client GUI. This approach enables mainstream corporate developers the ability to develop solutions without being a Java, RMI, or Web Services expert, but rather focus their application development at the business logic level and even be able to re-use existing data and logic.

XTT Technology surpasses other Java based distributed application approaches that utilize JSP pages especially in cases where the client workflow process is better served by a rich GUI solution delivered anywhere. Competing solutions only go half way in that they require 2 code bases -- pure Java for the LAN solution and HTML for the Internet. In the cases where a rich GUI is required everywhere competing solutions require development of RMI calls (not Internet friendly), however XTT uses XML and HTTP in the communication layer, both of which are abstracted by the framework, again lowering the barrier of entry to our technology.

XTT Technology also provides developers with rich client solutions that give them extreme flexibility as to where business logic is executed while maintaining a very thin footprint --- in most cases thinner than a comparable HTML solution.

Development in XTT is done through a combination of wizards and by integrating XTT components into the Sun ONE Studio, NetBeans, and JBuilder IDEs, and by using the IDE’s point and click interface. XTT’s goal is rapid application development, yet it does not limit the developer’s ability to use any of the standard Java techniques.

This presentation will cover the following items:
  • What is XTT?
  • Current state of J2EE development and how XTT is changing that Paradigm
  • XTT Architecture
  • XTT Features and Benefits
  • Deployment options for applications built in XTT

Product Demonstration Featuring:

  • RAD development of thin client Java forms
    • Using XTT’s wizards: TableView / Form / Popup / LockViewer
    • Integration with IDEs
  • Integration with Legacy systems
  • Calling remote java logic
  • Web services Integration
    • Dynamic visualization of web services on the fly
  • Product Availability –Community and Licensed Versions
Company Summary
The InsiTech Group is a leading edge IT firm specializing in the use of Java and XML to create ultra-thin, rich-client J2EE applications.

InsiTech’s flagship product, XML Tunneling Technology (XTT), is a Java application development and runtime framework designed to appeal to application developers through wizards and standardized patterns of development.

The XTT Framework is targeted at building enterprise class applications in heavy transaction oriented vertical markets such as: Health Care, Financial Services, Insurance, and Manufacturing. XTT’s robust RAD environment enables the creation of rich GUI J2EE forms through a development interface very similar to Visual Basic“ or PowerBuilder“.

XTT based forms are built in seconds and not hours with the added benefit of a single language and code base to manage. XTT is not an IDE, rather it is a 100% pure Java application that is used to extend the capabilities of Sun ONE Studio, NetBeans, and JBuilder IDEs.
