"Bring Back the GUI" Droplets Inc.
| Thanks to Lou Franco, Chief Architect, and Frank Leon Rose, co-founder, of Droplets Inc. for their January 21st presentation on Droplets. |
Lou and Frank showed how the Droplets SDK and server could be used to build applications that look and behave like locally installed software but run on the server and deploy like web applications. They presented a technical overview of Droplets along with several examples and worked through a sample chat application.

Abstract
| Lou and Frank will show how to use the Droplets SDK to build applications that look and behave like locally installed software but run on the server and deploy like web applications. In this presentation, they will discuss the trends that have led to the need for a server-side deliverable GUI, show Droplets applications, and finally, build an application using the Droplets SDK.
| Droplets is a privately held software vendor headquarted in NYC. The Droplets platform frees developers to build applications with all of the UI functionality of locally installed desktop software without giving up the benefits of web-style deployment. Droplets run on the server (like a JSP), but instead of rendering HTML, they are connected to a Droplets client that knows how to draw desktop style GUI's. The Droplets API is modeled on GUI component APIs like Swing and AWT, so it will look familiar to any Java GUI developer. Droplets is a member of the JCP and sits on JSR127 (Java Server Faces) which is an emerging standard for component based server side user interfaces. The Droplet Platform was recently featured in an article at java.sun.com (http://java.sun.com/features/2002/08/droplets.html). |
