Tuesday November 18th - Service Oriented Architecture
Summary
Thanks to Jon Webster of FiTech Laboratories for his presentation on Service Oriented Architecture. He covered the basics of SOA and the benefits an organization can derive from embracing it. Jon attempted to dispel the commonly held belief that SOA and webservices are synonymous. SOA is not a new concept and actually predates webservices but has enjoyed a rebirth as webservices greatly facilitate SOA implementation.

Jon demonstrated xNova which has been developed by FiTech. XNova provides a set of prewritten which can be integrated into an existing Java or .Net application with a minimal amount of effort. All attendees received a free copy of the software limited to one cpu.

Abstract
Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) has become a hot topic across the technology industry. It is most commonly associated with Web Services, however, SOA is not equivalent to Web Services. Properly understood SOA is a powerful design pattern which can bring many benefits to your applications.

In this presentation Jon Webster, Technical Director at Fitech Laboratories will discuss what exactly an SOA is, how Web Services relate to SOA and how by utilizing a service providing semantic when developing your applications you can increase the reuse, quality, reliability, and interoperability of your internally developed applications.

Finally, Jon will provide a code level demonstration of an SOA and demonstrate the ease with which a properly designed SOA can immediately provide benefits in your development projects by demonstrating the integration footprint of the SOA and its services.

Jon Webster has been working with Java since it's introduction in 1995 and has an extensive background in J2EE from his work as a Lead Consulting Engineer for Silverstream Software (recently purchased by Novell).

Jon brings over 11 years of international consulting, crisis management and technical experience to Fitech Laboratories Inc. and has worked extensively with the leading firms in the Insurance, Financial Services as well as other
significant international clients.

He brings an entrepreneurial mindset to Fitech Laboratories having founded two startups and created a successful Canadian based consulting firm that provided strategic technology consulting to the manufacturing industries. Additionally, Jon was a partner in a Toronto based investment group providing all technical strategy and due diligence council to the group.
